Geolocator / GPS tracking competition

If you conduct research on shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and could benefit from understanding where your birds travel (locally or long-distance), consider entering the Geolocator/GPS Tracking Competition to win one of two different tracking device packages courtesy of Migrate Technology Ltd and Druid Technology Co. Ltd.

How to enter

To enter the competition, please complete the contest application form and submit to Richard_lanctot@fws.gov by 17:00 (Korean Standard Time) 2 November 2020. One winner per option will be announced at the East Asian-Australasian Shorebird Science Meeting by 5 November 2020.

Entrants may submit only one contest application form per option (see below). In the case of multiple entries by the same person, only the first submission received under each option will be considered.

Awards

Option 1: 50 geolocators, model W30A9R-SEA-COOL, and 1 x IntigeoIF interface from Migrate Technology Ltd, Cambridge, United Kingdom

These are 0.45g weight 15x5x4mm light level geolocators that principally record light level for geolocation use, and also can record wet/dry conditions and temperature for activity studies. It has been designed for leg ring/flag attachment to shorebirds and non-diving seabirds. The ‘R’ in the name denotes an improvement in power efficiency compared to the original W30. The geolocators are anticipated to record a whole year of data. As with all Migrate Technology Ltd. loggers, devices that have been used as intended can be returned to us at any time for data extraction at no extra cost. The award winner will need to connect with James Fox of Migrate Technology Ltd as soon as possible as he wishes to prepare the geolocators by 1 December 2020. These loggers are for trial purposes and do not have any exclusive warranty. A condition of accepting this prize will be that the winning entrant will need to report back to the company the number of geolocators working after a year, the total number retrieved (i.e., in order to establish failure rate), and a handful of downloaded data files that will be used only for logger performance examination. The data will belong to the winning entrant and would not be used to publish anything pertaining to research of the animals tagged. The company understands that retrieval rate may be low, and, in the worst case, none would be retrieved.

Powered by the featured function called BOOST, this model averagely provides 200-1000 GPS fixings per day. It weighs from 20.5 grams and is available with multiple heights for good solar charging, including 16mm, 26mm, 40mm, and 50 mm.
  2. [2]Debut OMNI (3G) records GPS, environmental, ODBA and x/y/z acceleration data, and transmits through 3G mobile network. Powered by the featured function called BOOST, this model averagely provides 100-500 GPS fixings per day. It weighs 10.5 grams.
  3. [3]Debut Mini (2G) records GPS, environmental, and ODBA data, and transmits through 2G mobile network. This model weighs 6.2 grams and provides 100-500 GPS fixings per day powered by BOOST. When flying pass regions without 2G coverage, it can safely store data of up to 460 days in its memory and send back when 2G coverage is available.
  4. [4]Debut Nano (BLE) records GPS, environmental, ODBA and x/y/z acceleration data, and transmits through Bluetooth connection with a smart phone or Debut HUB, with a range of up to 1000 meter. This model weighs 3.7 grams and has a life span of 3-5 years with highly-efficient solar charging.
  5. [5]Debut HUB (3G) is used as a gateway to collect data from NANO devices. It weighs 480g with metal housing, has built-in battery and can be charged by cable or solar. It is usually deployed on the field for automatic data collection and device management.
  6. [6]Debut Renewal Plan is an extended warranty service that gives the user a chance for free replacement anytime for any reason. The user can activate the Plan to get a new device from Druid Technology without paying.
  7. [7]The all-inclusive data services include unlimited global-roaming data transmission, cloud-based data management, and access to all functions on the webpage data center and mobile App. The duration of the data services purchased can be shared among multiple Debut series devices, including the renewed ones.

GPS devices vary tremendously in weight and in data transmission, so please select your preferred option carefully. The contest is open to anyone capable of conducting tracking studies on shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, and who has registered for the 1st East Asian-Australasian Flyway Shorebird Science Meeting. See further requirements on the application form.

This competition is administered by the 1st East Asian-Australasian Flyway Shorebird Science Meeting Organizers.

Judgement and criteria

Submitted entries will be considered by a selection panel. Winner selection is at the selection panel’s sole discretion. Please see conditions for applying and criteria for judgement on the application form.
